Surface & Groundwater Pollution

Maspalomas pond, located within the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve in Gran Canaria, receives water flows during intense rainfall events. These flows can carry diffuse pollutants from urban surfaces into a drainage system connected to the pond, posing challenges for stormwater management.
As a nature-based measure, a pilot project combining a filter trench with a bioretention system has been proposed. These interventions aim to reduce runoff pollution, filter part of the stormwater, and provide ecosystem benefits, such as creating green spaces and enhancing the urban landscape. The pilot will allow for evaluating the performance of these systems and assessing their potential contribution to water management and the preservation of the natural environment, showing how green infrastructure can be integrated into sensitive urban areas.
